Lipedema Treatment

Total Lipedema Care is led by Dr. Jaime S. Schwartz, a board-certified plastic surgeon and internationally recognized lipedema specialist. Throughout his career, Dr. Schwartz has been dedicated to advancing awareness and treatment of adipose tissue disorders, including lipedema — a chronic condition that is frequently underdiagnosed or mistaken for obesity.

He is widely known for treating complex lipedema cases and helping patients find relief from the pain, discomfort, and mobility challenges associated with the disease. As an educator and advocate, Dr. Schwartz works to increase physician awareness of adipose disorders, helping healthcare professionals recognize the clinical signs of lipedema and distinguish it from obesity.

Approach to Lipedema

Following the performance of Lymphatic Sparing Liposuction by Dr. Schwartz, the characteristic lipedema nodules often become more discernible. Through a specialized technique similar to deep manual lymphatic drainage, this fibrous, beaded fat is gently massaged to facilitate its expression and dislodgment through the surgical incision sites.

This meticulous process ensures the comprehensive removal of diseased adipose tissue, ultimately resulting in a smoother and more refined skin texture. Dr. Schwartz developed this advanced methodology — Manual Lipedema Extraction (MLE) — to provide therapeutic relief for patients presenting with even the most complex and advanced clinical cases of lipedema.

Candidacy for Manual Lipedema Extraction
All patients diagnosed with lipedema may be suitable candidates for MLE following a comprehensive evaluation by Dr. Schwartz. Candidates typically exhibit symptoms that establish fat reduction as a medical necessity rather than a cosmetic preference — as fibrous fat becomes increasingly resistant to non-surgical interventions over time.

Medical Advantages of MLE

  • Smoother, more refined skin texture through removal of fibrous nodules
  • Significant improvement in gait and pain-free mobility
  • Enhanced systemic blood circulation
  • Mitigation of lymphatic fluid accumulation
  • Long-term alleviation of chronic pain

Risks of Untreated Lipedema

  • Poor fit and efficacy of compression garments
  • Chronic fluid retention and tissue pressure
  • Early-onset arthritis and structural deformities
  • Impaired gait and reduced mobility
  • Venous complications, ulcers, and infections

Choosing surgical treatment following a diagnosis is a significant milestone. Dr. Schwartz is dedicated to supporting MLE candidates by providing immediate symptom relief and halting disease progression — with ongoing, patient-centered care through scheduled follow-up appointments and continued monitoring.
