ABOUT LIPOMAS

A lipoma is a growth of fat cells encapsulated within fibers and tissues beneath the skin. In most cases, they are found just beneath the surface of the skin and may be located anywhere on the body. Lipomas are benign (noncancerous) but should be examined by a professional when they are discovered to ensure they are not mistaken for something else. Dr. Jaime Schwartz, a board-certified plastic surgeon, is skilled to diagnose and treat patients with confirmed lipomas, as well as the conditions that often accompany the growths. At Total Lipedema Care in Beverly Hills, CA, we help patients cope with their lipoma-associated conditions using a personalized approach. Read on to learn more about the condition, then contact us to schedule your visit.

FAMILIAL MULTIPLE LIPOMATOSIS

When lipomas are small, they typically are not painful, and most patients do not need to seek treatment intervention. However, if patients feel insecure about visible lipomas or experience growths getting larger or painful, then an expert and plastic surgeon like Dr. Schwartz can provide treatment options.

SYMPTOMS OF THE CONDITION

Lipomas are typically not tender to the touch and feel soft and doughy when placing pressure on them. In most cases, lipomas are:

  • Just beneath the surface of the skin
  • Located on the arms, shoulders, neck, trunk, and thighs
  • Soft to the touch
  • Small in size
  • Painful if located on a nerve

CAUSES AND DIAGNOSIS

The only understood cause of lipomas is an inheritance. Beyond familial factors, there doesn’t seem to be an underlying cause of the growths. Certain risk factors increase your likelihood of developing a lipoma, including age, as individuals between 40 – 60 are most likely to discover a lipoma.

Only a physician should diagnose a lipoma. Although they are rarely serious, they could be confused with a cancerous mass. Anytime a lump is discovered on the body, the growth should be examined and potentially biopsied by your doctor. Dr. Schwartz will rule out the possibility of cancer before helping you understand your condition and potential treatment options.
